*Communications Associate Sought by Stop Prisoner Rape*

 

Stop Prisoner Rape (SPR), an international human rights organization that seeks to end sexual violence in all forms of detention, is hiring a Communications Associate. SPR has three core goals for its work: to engender policies that ensure institutional accountability for sexual violence behind bars; to change society's attitudes toward prisoner rape; and to promote access to resources for survivors of this type of violence. With its headquarters in Los Angeles, SPR recently opened an East Coast office in Washington, DC that primarily focuses on the organization's federal initiatives. The Communications Associate will be based in the Washington, DC office, while maintaining regular contact with West Coast colleagues.

 

Job description:

.  Develop and oversee the implementation of strategic communications campaigns.

.  Conduct human rights reporting, including face-to-face interviews with inmates.

.  Strengthen and maintain SPR's profile as a leading human rights organization.

.  Cultivate relationships with press contacts.

 

Qualifications:

.  Exceptional written and oral communications skills.

.  Degree in journalism, public policy, communications or related field.

.  Minimum 2-4 years of professional experience in journalism, communications, or advocacy.

.  Commitment to protecting human rights for all people and comfort with discussing sexual violence issues.

.  Ability to multi-task under deadlines, perform complex analytical work, and advance organizational views authoritatively.

.  Ability to supervise assistants and interns.

.  Spanish language skills highly desirable.

 

Activities will include but are not limited to:

.  Write press releases, letters-to-the-editor, and guest opinion editorials.

.  Respond to press queries and requests for information; serve as an educational resource for journalists; arrange interviews for Executive Director and other SPR spokespersons.

.  Contact editors, reporters, and producers to spur coverage of SPR's programs and positions.

.  Maintain press lists and human rights listserv.

.  Draft and oversee the production of SPR newsletter (Action Update) and other publications.

.  Keep SPR website content up-to-date and coordinate collaboration with web designer.
