Deputy Director for Legal Division sought by the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, a non-profit legal advocacy agency. DRC Kansas is the designated protection and advocacy system for Kansas.  Primary responsibility is to be the Managing Attorney and handle the day-to-day management of Legal Division (Legal Team, Intake and Advocacy Team). Must be licensed attorney. A requirement of the job is to have or obtain a law license in Kansas.

 

Final salary offer is commensurate with salary history & experience.  Depending on that salary history and experience, upward limit can potentially be in the $80,000 or $90,000 range. Agency pays 100% of the employee’s BC&BS Health Care.  DRC also has a pension plan (KPERS retirement system) and other great benefits.

Summary of Duties:

·        Acts as the Managing Attorney over the Legal Division (which includes the Legal Team and the Intake & Advocacy Team).  The Legal Division is made up of 11 staff members under the Legal Team and the Intake & Advocacy Team.  The Legal Team has seven practicing attorneys and one legal secretary.  The Intake & Advocacy Team has three advocates & intake staff.    

·        Position is a manager first and foremost, but may have an active caseload as well.

·        Ensures and enables the quality legal and advocacy services provided in the Legal Division.

·        Works with attorneys and advocates in the Legal Division to support their work.

·        Treats attorneys and advocates with the high-level of respect that their law degrees, experience or education dictate.    

·        Responsible for day-to-day management, supervision and planning functions of the Legal Division. 

·        Fosters a teamwork setting where attorneys can practice law and maximize there abilities and advocates can maximize there skills. 

·        Responsible for developing internal agency policies and procedures

·        Responsible for developing, implementing and ensuring accountability of the agency’s legal, intake and casework policies & procedures

·        Assists with Outreach, Communications and Public Policy Work

  • Engages actively in the agency’s strategic planning efforts.  This position is responsible for carrying out and implementing the Board’s strategic plan on all matters under the Legal Division (ex: developing and ensuring implementation of the work plans and tasks to achieve the goals, priorities and outcomes set by the strategic plan).
